Youth Activities – Laura was active in many neighborhood activities in NE in the
park system, along with her siblings; John, Anne, Greg, Catherine and Jimmy. At
the age of 9 she began tumbling lessons at Waite Park Elementary which began her
long career in gymnastics. Due to the high cost of gymnastics lessons, Laura
benefited from local organizations like this that financially supported the
community.
High School – Laura attended Edison High School where she competed in
Swimming/Diving, Gymnastics and Track. While attending Edison she received
honors in all three sports at the city and regional level and qualified for state
competition in both diving and gymnastics. She was awarded the Athena Award as
a senior for athletic excellence. She was fortunate to have been mentored by many
wonderful coaches and surrounded by other amazing female athletes and friends.
College – Laura attended Winona State University where she received a degree in
Elementary Education, a Math Minor and a Coaching Certificate. During her
college years she competed in gymnastics for four years, assistant coached the
Winona State Team for her fifth year and was a high school gymnastics judge.
During her time at Winona, the gymnastics team won two NAIA National
Championships and Laura was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award her junior and
senior years and was team captain her senior year.
Beyond College – Laura has coached gymnastics for children ages 3-18, been a
gymnastics judge and has been involved in watching her boys play sports. She has
been married to Tony for 35 years and has two adult sons, Daniel and Stephen. She
has also taught children grades K-8 in science and math. She is currently retired
from teaching. One of her greatest joys has been being involved in children’s
ministry in her community and giving back to the community. She has been very
blessed and is grateful to God for the opportunities she has been given and for the
amazing people she has met along the way.

Football 1975-79. Turned down a scholarship from NDSU to walk-on at the University of Minnesota with an invitation from legendary U of MN coach and Edison alumni Butch Nash. Freshman year original depth chart had me listed as 9th string noseguard. By sophomore year I was running third string. The first and 2nd string noseguards were injured in the first quarter of the 2nd game of the 1976 season. I
finished that game with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery and I ended up lettering and playing the rest of the 1976 season. I was given a full scholarship for the next three years (incudes ’78 redshirt). I ended up as the starting noseguard in 1979. Two-year letter winner. Participant of the 1977 Hall of Fame Bowl game. Played in the 1977 16-0 win over No. 1 rated team in the country Michigan. BS Business major.
Post College:
Did the softball gig for several years but fell in love and played 40 years of broomball. Our team would do well and most times win our Van Cleve Park league but never went too far in the city championship tournament. A couple marathons, triathlons since but now enjoy pickleball!

Minneapolis water department for 35 years and retired in 2006
Mike Doyle
Hi! I’m Mike Doyle, born May 4 th , 1937, in Deaconess Hospital, Minneapolis. I grew up in Lauderdale, (between Minneapolis and Saint Paul). I went to school, K-8 th grade, in Lauderdale and then to Marshall High School, graduating in 1955. We moved into Southeast Minneapolis my sophomore year. We lived right across the street from the Witch's Tower, (the water tower top that looks like a witch's hat) in Prospect Park.
I played football, hockey, and baseball at Marshall High School. At seventeen, I joined
the US Navy Reserves and served for 10 years. I attended the University of Minnesota, where I also played hockey for coach John Mariucci.
After college graduation, in 1961, I moved to Chisolm, MN, and started their hockey
program. In 1967, I received a phone call from the principal at Edison High School,
who had been my football coach at Marshall. I took a job teaching French and coaching hockey. I coached hockey there for 14 years. When my own children were going through high school, I remained teaching French but no longer coached Edison’s hockey team. In 1990, I added Athletic Director to my resume.
To cap off my career, my youngest daughter, Amy, attended Edison High School, played three sports, and graduated in 1994. I retired in 1995 as Edison High School’s Athletic Director and French teacher.
After retirement, I coached girls’ hockey, traveled the world, practiced ball with my
grandkids, and attended games of all sports and levels.
